Omnicell's SafetyMed™ is a software solution that helps ensure patient safety and increases efficiency in the medication administration process. Integrated with Omnicell's top-rated OmniRx® medication dispensing cabinets and the OmniCenter® server, the SafetyMed bedside point-of-care solution uses bar code technology to confirm patient identity and the correct medications. SafetyMed helps nurses ensure that the five rights of medication administration are met:
- The right patient is ensured via SafetyMed scanning of the patient wristband bar code, verifying and documenting patient identity.
- The right drug is ensured since the bar code scan clearly identifies the correct medication ordered for the patient. If no bar code is available, the nurse is able to verify correct administration by checking the real-time order details within SafetyMed.
- The right dose is ensured as SafetyMed provides dosage information showing date/time, dose, comments, and the ID of the nurse administering the medications.
- The right route in ensured as SafetyMed enables clear identification of the medication ordered for the patient and requires that the route be part of the medication order, whether profiled or via override.
- The right time is ensured as SafetyMed provides warnings of overdue and early administration of medications, enabling appropriate clinical follow-up.
